Portrait by Robert Sturman

Before Trombone Shorty was a worldwide sensation, he was Troy Andrews from Treme, New Orleans. And while I was driving back from lunch yesterday, I caught one of his songs on the radio. I was listening to my favorite program, which had a New Orleans theme since Sunday is the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. I was not familiar with this track, as I only have some of Trombone Shorty’s music (none of Troy Andrews’). But needless to say, it quickly rocked my socks off. It sounds like he had a different vocalist back in 2002 when this song was released; he typically does a lot of his own vocals these days. If you’ve never heard of this former child trombone prodigy, check out this picture of him at age 5 owning the trombone with the Carlsberg Brass Band from Denmark (this is where the Trombone Shorty moniker comes from). And by all means, enjoy this super tight horn jam, which is a cover of the Jesse Hill classic from 1960.
